We hear it from the kids

Hector, age 2½ (above left) says...

What's your favourite thing to do with mummy and daddy? (When I wake up at 5am everyday...) I like to build things out of Duplo with Daddy.

What's your favourite story? 'The Elephant and the Bad Baby.'

What's your favourite food, and least favourite, too? Pasta with Marmite and cheese. Potatoes are 'gusting!

What do you want to be when you grow up? A train driver so I can go TOOT TOOT on the horn like the driver did for me in London yesterday.

Hector's Mum & Dad say...

What keeps Hector still for more than 5 minutes? When all else fails, we give him a bucket of water and a paintbrush and let him 'paint' the outside walls and terrace - he'll be at it for hours!

What's the most memorable thing that Hector has ever said? Overhearing him and his best friend Harry having a serious discussion as to whether Thomas or Percy was "the best 'nengine'". The debate continues...

How do you tackle tantrums? Distract or ignore!

What's your favourite family activity? Hector absolutely loves Thomas the Tank Engine, so a special treat is to go on the Steam Railway on a 'Day out with Thomas'. It's a lovely day out for all of us, especially when his fellow train fanatic and great-grandpa 'Bampa' comes too!

Zach, age 8 (above left of centre) says...

What's your favourite thing to do with mummy and daddy? I love to play outside with Mummy and Daddy. Daddy plays football and rugby and American Football with me and Mummy takes me to the beach to play in the sand and sea.

What's your favourite story? 'Room on a Broom.'

What's your favourite food, and least favourite, too? My favourite is roast dinner and least favourite is salad.

What do you want to be when you grow up? I want to play football or rugby like my Uncle Rob.

Milo, age 3 (above centre) says...

What's your favourite thing to do with mummy and daddy? Swimming. I can swim without armbands and can swim to the bottom of the swimming pool to get rings.

What's your favourite story? Peppa Pig when Peppa and George go swimming.

What's your favourite food, and least favourite, too? My favourite is sausages and mashed potato and least favourite is salad.

What do you want to be when you grow up? A basketball player.

Zach & Milo's Mum & Dad say...

What keeps Zach and Milo still for more than 5 minutes? Games. They love to play board games, with a little bit of competition. Of course we let them win...sometimes!

What's the most memorable thing that they've ever said? The second most memorable thing, as the first was most definitely a swear word (heard from an outside source of course), was when we were on holiday and the boys had spent the best part of five hours swimming and playing with friends. My eldest Zach, 5 at the time, said, "Daddy, is this a dream?" Short but so full of innocence and sincerity that a simple day doing fun things for hours on end was so good it was dreamlike.

How do you tackle tantrums? When very young we tried the time out approach but with two boys at such differing ages this quickly became too difficult to execute. Now we simply ignore and carry on having fun or doing something interesting. They soon feel left out and forget why they threw the tantrum in the first place.

What's your favourite family activity? The beach. We moved to the coast to have the seaside on our doorstep. The boys feel so free and happy at the beach and it gives us a chance to relax whilst they play as well as joining in for a bit of fun and frolics too. We can easily spend the day at the beach and not realise where the time has gone.

Bea, age 2½ (above right of centre) says...

What's your favourite thing to do with mummy and daddy? I love huggles on the sofa with a story.

What's your favourite story? 'The Tiger Who Came To Tea'.

What's your favourite food, and least favourite, too? I love sausages and smiley faces with carrots, but I don't like eggs!

What do you want to be when you grow up? I want to be Postman Pat.

Bea's Mum & Dad say...

What keeps Bea still for more than 5 minutes? Bea loves playing with her doll's house and little figures and telling her dolls a story.

What's the most memorable thing that Bea has ever said? She tells us about ten times a day "I love you sooo much!" which is the best thing to hear from your child.

How do you tackle tantrums? We give her a warning and then a count up to three to calm down, and, if that doesn't work, we take her away from the situation - she can have a real temper on her at times!

What's your favourite family activity? Bea and her sister Ava love going swimming or to the seaside, but are equally happy being at home playing in their new garden.

Flynn, age 9 (above right) says...

What's your favourite thing to do with mum and dad? Playing cards.

What's your favourite story? 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid'.

What's your favourite food, and least favourite, too? My favourite is pasta and least favourite is cabbage.

What do you want to be when you grow up? I'd like to be a singer.

Flynn's Mum & Dad say...

What keeps Flynn still for more than 5 minutes? The iPad!

What's the most memorable thing that Flynn has ever said? "Family is all that matters, none of the rest is important."

How do you tackle tantrums? We threaten to send him to military school!!! (Dad was in the army!)

What's your favourite family activity? We love to go on bike rides and, of course, holidays!
