How to grow your own and eat it too!

Author, Telegraph and Gardener's World Magazine columnist Alex Mitchell has joined forces with her friend, cookery writer and teacher CJ Jackson, to hold a series of workshops to discover the best grow-your-own varieties and how to care for them before eventually turning them into delicious, easy dishes. The price includes coffee and homemade cakes on arrival, a delicious lunch prepared from seasonal homegrown produce by CJ, and a goody bag to take home including seeds and a Pot to Pot book of recipes and growing tips.

Jo Arnell's Autumn Workshop (inc. compost & collecting seed)

Workshop dates: 20 or 21 September 2014

WT features writer Jo's workshops are small and informal with plenty of opportunity for discussion (and her tasty homemade cake). She supplies all tools for these practical sessions, so you should prepare for being in the garden some of the time and be sure to wear old shoes or wellies and outdoor clothes. Learn about plants that have a presence throughout the year. Some are architectural in shape, many have interesting seed-heads, berries, good autumn colour, or striking bark. Jo will also explain the best approach to making compost, collecting seed (to take home and sow) and gardening sustainably.

Curtain Making at Sew Not Strawberry Jam

Workshop date: 12 September 2014

If there is one thing Sew Not Strawberry Jam recommends it is how to make and line curtains, properly! Curtain making is such a useful skill and means you can give any room an instant facelift, plus save yourself some pennies in the long run. At this workshop you will work on your own sample curtain to take home the know-how to complete the entire process – fabric measuring, cutting, weighting, stitching and applying the heading tape.

Roman Blinds with Ginny Peace

Workshop date: 11 September 2014

Location, time & cost: Cranbrook, 9.30am-5pm, £125

The workshop is suitable for beginners and those who have a little experience. Techniques taught will include • Design considerations when using Roman blinds • Calculating fabric requirements • Choosing a Roman blind system (batten or headrail) • Calculating the size and number of folds. You'll work on a sample before making a Roman blind to a professional standard. You'll need to bring a sewing machine (if you have one), a basic sewing kit plus a notebook and pen. All other materials will be provided. The workshop is limited to a maximum of 4 to ensure that everyone gets the right amount of attention and includes all materials as well as coffee on arrival, a two course homemade lunch and afternoon tea.

8 Week Introduction to the Wonderful World of Wine Course

Workshop dates: Thursdays 11 & 18 Sept, 2, 9, 16 & 30 Oct, 6 & 13 Nov

Location, time & cost: Hotel du Vin, Tunbridge Wells, 7-9pm, £95 (plus a £10 charge for wine per evening payable on the night. This helps to spread the cost of the course, which works out at under £22 per evening)

The course is structured as a practical introduction to the world of wine. It is designed specifically for people who enjoy wine and would like to learn more about it. You do not need any previous experience and the emphasis is on learning by tasting different varieties of wine with friendly people. It is also a great way to meet new friends who share your love of wine. By the end of the 8 evenings you will have gained a good understanding of the world's major grape varieties and the wine styles they produce; you will have been taught to assess and taste wine like a true professional, and be able to identify any faults (e.g. a corked wine).

Professional ISO tasting glasses, comprehensive tasting notes, course handouts, maps, booklets and some food are all provided.

You will be preparing and cooking a starter, main and dessert on the day, learning new techniques. Also included is a three course lunch and a glass of wine.
